Rackspace email & DNS

If I were to slice off $100 of my time I do not think I could maintain a mail server within that time frame.  And since I'm a one man band, it is one less thing for me to worry about.

Thank you for working through this with me.

Yes, that looks like a good deal at Rackspace.

Google Aps just changed their service levels.

There is also a mail relay option at something like dyndns.org.  They have a few other options.

I think Rackspace has excellent reputation anyway and that IS CHEAP!

I agree.  I enjoyed installing and configuring Qmail Toaster.  However I have lots of other things that demand my time.  It's not feasible for me to run a mail server - would be a lot of fun though.  There are other considerations as well.

The free Google Apps mail is limited to 10 email accounts.  I need 20 for one group and 30 for another.  That pushes me into the $5/mo or $50/yr.  Rackspace offers commerial grade emial at $2/mo with 10Gig mailboxes.

If I am wrong about the Google free email please let me know.

It's really fun to run a mail server!

With a correctly configured postfix, exim or sendmail it's very fun.

Of course, I learned in 1995 in dot com startups where we were selling dialup maintaining multiple mail servers.

The people I worked with were all really creative and easy going.

Of course I prefer for security sake to use gmail relay now at home.

Another alternative is Google Aps for domains mail (free).

I think it is cheaper to spend $100 a month to let someone else run the email server than for me to take on all those headaches.  I started down that path and found it was going to take a lot of on going effort.   I's not the cost of the server, it is the cost of time.

You get to that amount, and it's on the border of creating your own mail server.
It's not terribly hard, it just takes security planning.

I looked at google and they are $5/mo or $50/yr per box.  I need about 50 mailboxes.  That turns out to be $1,800 more a year.  Rackspace has 10g mailboxes and Google has 25g mailboxes.  I'm guessing all else is equal.  We just need plain old mail.  Nothing fancy.

Thanks!
