The list server (GNU Mailman) uses the password as a very minor gating element and it is not intended to be secure.  The server warns that the password is stored and emailed in clear text on the signup page.
  "You may enter a privacy password below. This provides only mild security, but should prevent others from messing with your subscription. Do not use a valuable password as it will occasionally be emailed back to you in cleartext."
