Booting from a USB Drive

I will probably do that in the future. I got this one on a cheap
Black Friday special so isn't a bad machine but I don't wanna void the
warrentee by taring into it to change out the drive. That's why I was
messing about with this work-around.

As an update to my problem, I found out today that grub is actually
coming up when I attempt to boot it but it then claims it can't find
the file systems it needs. So I may have to mess with different path
options when building the grub image next time. The Arch Linux
installer offered the grub build step and gave me the choice of using
exact dev names like /dev/sdb, file system labels or the UUID or
whatever it's called. I tried the file system label route. The more
I think about that part of it however, I think that had more to do
with the fstab and mount points. I'll definitely have to look further
at this.

I tried rerunning grub with chroot but it couldn't find the /dev
items; I think I have to do something with devices before chrooting
and making grub installs. I forget the command to do this. Asside
from this booting issue, it will be neat to have a portable linux
system I could conceivably take to any computer I want.
