don't think that's it, it consistently tells me it can't find the file
I'm trying to create:

Thu Feb 11, 01:11 PM
paul at paulbox:~ $ sudo tar cjpf /backups/bkup/2010-02-11.tar.bz2
/home/paul/Desktop/
tar: /backups/bkup/2010-02-11.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
Thu Feb 11, 01:12 PM
paul at paulbox:~ $ sudo tar cf /backups/bkup/2010-02-11.tar /home/paul/Desktop/
tar: /backups/bkup/2010-02-11.tar: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
