personal linux install

Im getting ready to roll linux back onto my main desktop, however
previously i had some issues getting things to run gracefully under
wine with the Radeon 2900Xt i have in here. or with the Creative X-Fi
for sound. the on-board works, but well its on-board and sucks
(audiophile without budget).

This was all running ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 later. are there any other
distributions that people can suggest that might have a littel better
interaction with these slightly recalcitrant devices?
