Thanks for all your suggests...they came in so fast and it has taken so long
to run the scans, that I thought single update would be most helpful.

What I did:

1. Ran Microsoft Security Thingy - ://
www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx. Removed a couple of
adware and a trojan.

2. Ran ClamAV - found a few more viri and removed them.

3. Ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - removed a couple of adwares

(all three scans ran with latest virus/malware definitions).

4. Updated Windows XP....only thing missing was a small .NET update. I am
running SP3.

Still cannot log in with new account. It seems that the system does not save
the password for the user account (limited account, not admin account type).
The first time I log in with the new password, I get the a popup with the
logon message:

"Unable to log you on because of an account violation."

Each subsequent attempt to logon results in a "Did you forget your
password?" error message. Googling the first error message makes me think
that the password is not being saved when I change it, because that message
seems to pertain to people creating accounts with null passwords, and then
not setting up the system to allow null password logins. My system is set up
to require logon with a password, and I have set one for this account many
times. I have tried different passwords, account names, etc. to no avail.

I even tried going into safe mode and on the command line typed:

net user ipod *

entered the new password twice and got a command successfully completed
message. Still cannot log in with user ipod, although all my other users can
log in with their passwords.

Any other ideas or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated! Rebuilding
the system from scratch is not really an option. All I want to do is create
a simple user account with a password.

Thanks!

Mark
