I would point out that, the power of big newspapers is less today
(or, at least very different) from back in the generation of the depression.
This is partly due to the BLOG-o-sphere.

on the contrary! - - every individual has his/her own agenda.
    But I think that the nature of the internet does have the potential
to level the playing field, where a person's reputation is based upon
their power to think, to put ideas in to words, to express opinions
honestly, etc.
    IMHO, this potentially could be a good thing for the future.
