Some External HDD Questions

I plugged in a USB drive and dd the internal drive to
a file on the external USB drive.  It took 9 hours to
dd a 40 GB internal drive.
40 GB * 1024 MB/GB / (9 hrs * 60 min/hr * 60 sec/min)
= 40960 / 32400
= 1.2 MB/sec

I used USB2 hardware (this was a requirement on the
purchase), new drives, and a really new kernel with
USB2 support.  Maybe this is a limitation with dd? 
The external hard drive's light blinks alot and the
box seems I/O bound when I do it.
