The no-sound question (clarification)

First, I have no sound.  When I try to run Amarok, a window 
opens and I can see a little "equalizer" type graphic displaying 
some apparent sound, but I cannot hear any sound from the 
audio output jack (the green one).

Before some smart-aleck unloads on me about the above statement, 
what I meant to say was, I cannot hear any sound from (any 
speaker or headphone plugged into) the audio output jack.

I may be slow, but I do realize that sound does not come out 
of that little mini-pin hole. ;))
