This may be off topic, (/not what you were looking for), but if
you have a web browser, (and the group you are interested in
is somewhat well known), the you can just use
    http://groups.google.com/
e.g., for rec.arts.books you would go to
    http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.books/topics?hl=en
