kubuntu and 64 bit computing - and bugs

ok guys,
I recently made the switch to Kubuntu on my 64 bit system and found 
some 'interesting' quirks......

firstly, Kubuntu is very "bleeding edge" so some problems are to be expected.

here's a few:

1: vmware server (ver 1.0.3) will not compile properly without a third party 
patch (and vmware seems a bit slow with their development corps to correct 
this, at least for feisty_fawn). vmware has one additional problem, the 
bridge may not communicate properly (ping will work, but ssh times out).

2: random kernel bugs dealing with the RTC controller (cannot access or init)

3: random hardware reboots (nailed this down to improper driver handling 
of 'cable selected' large HDD's) resolved by specifically jumpering such 
drives as master/slave where appropriate.

4: random filesystem errors directly dealing with JFS (jfs is not installed or 
supported directly by feisty_fawn and requires installation of jfs tools 
package to resolve). random kernel weirdness here sometimes (not repeatably) 
results in errors that mimic a completely corrupted set of superblocks on the 
jfs formatted drive. rebooting and manually checking with a known good rescue 
disk often results in 'no errors' found. upon full restart into installed OS, 
problems appear to "magically disappear"

5. none of the image or streaming plugins for any of the web browsers (except 
real player) appear to support 64bit. this makes it rather difficult to use 
YOUTUBE or some other sites that use flash, etc.

6. some of the devel packages for java appear to be broken (as Azureus and 
some other advanced torrent packages will not work or compile properly). 
other packages that depend on java or its devel packages may be similarly 
affected in unpredictable ways.

now. feisty_fawn has a lot of "eye candy" and generally works "OK" for a 
workstation install. However, it is no where near ready for some of 
the "server applications" I am throwing at it. just remember, YMMV.
