Well, The light finally came on. I did not appreciate the difference in the way the two formats are handled on the system. I am now able to mount the two partitions on the USB hard drive and set the owner to me so I can read write and delete files as user. I will try setting in the UID for the VFAT partition next time I reboot. Thanks very much
