Looking for recommendations for Linux laptop

It is extremely difficult to get a laptop without paying for windows.
Even if you get one without windows you usually pay for it anyway.

I've heard most of the vendors have agreements with MS so that they pay
for a license of windows on every machine.  Of course they pass those
costs on to us.

If she is serious about ONLY needing wireless access and running linux
commands you can buy almost anything.  I think that's being a little
short sighted though.  If your going to spend at least $500 on a laptop
why not spend $200 more and get something decent?

Some tips:
  Do NOT go for huge hard drives or faster processors
  DO get more ram and faster hard drives
