Looking for recommendations for Linux laptop

Well, she really likes it but, the desktop system became hers and hers
alone when I got this notebook.  We want to upgrade the kids' computer
but figure on migrating slowly to all notebooks because portability is
good.  We get her a notebook, the kids get the better desktop system and
the kids' old computer either becomes a server or is donated away.

The truth is that we planned for here to borrow the notebook on
occasions when needed.  However, I integrated the notebook into "how I
do things" so quickly and completely, it is painful for me to let her
borrow it.  So she is getting her own soon.

That's the plan, anyway.
