How do I save a disk image of my laptop hard drive?

I like the idea....but the connectors for power and such are not compatible 
with my old PIII tower. I guess I could go hunting for some patch cables....

I started life as a hardware guy and then moved to software, as I found there 
was usually an easier solution in software than hardware! ;-)
