Clarity at last. This does work. In fact it also works if I use "su"
instead of "sudo su". The only difference being whether I enter my user
password or root's password. What does NOT work is using "su -". Using the
- option is what I have been doing and reporting and that prevents passing
all or some of the current environment as it MEANS to use the environment of
the target user as if they has logged in directly. I don't fully understand
all the differences but some of them as affect this issue are now more
clear.

And what tool are you running that is not working?

For the nth time, it is not a particular tool, but rather a quest to
understand things and an objection to an apparent confinement of my freedom
to do as I will on my own systems. There may remain a couple of issues here
but they remain to be discovered/described.

Thank you everyone for all the help!
