On the Red Hat systems, you would have to install the 'sendmail-cf' and
the m4 package for generating a sendmail.cf file from the sendmail.mc

This I found intensely more favorable than trying to learn how to edit
sendmail.cf files directly.

My guess is that you would need something similar on slackware/OpenBSD
boxes.

Myself, I stopped using sendmail a few years ago and went postfix
