Linux on laptops

I dl'd the beta of Ubuntu's newest live cd and thought it was pretty lame.
It didn't seem to come with any really interesting packages and I didn't
like the look and feel of the desktop. Is the full install that much better
than the love cd? I'm not knocking it, I'm just curious because I've heard
that Google uses Ubuntu and was just wondering what all the hullabaloo is
about. I would install it to check it out, but I'm running CentOS/XP,
Hardened Gentoo and SUSE 10/XP on my machines and don't have room right now.

If anyone could post back with a short list of what you like about Ubuntu
(if you like Ubuntu) I'd be interested in hearing. I was under the
impression that it is just a very easy, kind of novice distro that works
with a lot of hardware, etc. and installs quickly. Am I missing something?

I have one word for you: Ubuntu.

I am nuking my Debian install on my laptop in favor of Ubuntu sometime
this month.
