Setting 777 for everything does not fix problems. In fact, a lot of 
software tries to outsmart you by checking for valid/safe/sane permissions 
and so you end up breaking things.

What was the permission for it before. It should be readable and 
executable by everyone and only writable (at the most) by the root owner.
