Have you thought of trying something more recent like Fedora Core?
At this point RH9 is getting long in the tooth.

When you say the OS loads it shows all the boot messages and services
starting, then goes blank at the end of it all?

It sounds like you have a x windows configuration problem. When
grub comes up, hit e, arrow to the line that starts kernel, hit e again,
and then add the following to the end of the line:

single

Then hit enter, and then b to boot. This should get you into single user
mode. I would then go to /etc and look at inittab and possibly change
the runlevel to 3 from 5 until you figure out what is causing the issue.

example of entry in /etc/inittab :

id:5:initdefault:

change it to:

id:3:initdefault:

at this point try 'telinit 3' and come up into multiuser mode. I don't
recall off the top of my head where the x config stuff gets put for RH9.
I don't think the switch to xorg had happened at that point. The RH9
manuals should tell you what command to run to configure x11. Make sure
you know the specs of you monitor so you can set it properly if it
doesn't automatically detect the monitor type.
