I use mepis. It was before ubuntu but I think they've adopted ubuntu since 
root's password doesn't work (unless I'm entering the wrong user name).

Uh-ohhhhhhhh...... entering into shadow group? I know what you are talking 
about but entering it is beyond me. My skills are lacking!
