Thanks for the additional testing, Carl. My next step was going to be to try 
  a different monitor with DVI, but I don't think I'll go there from what 
you've said.

What card are you using? eVGA's tech support was very good. I wonder if 
they're good with X configs too. Might be worth a shot.
