How to fix new Mandriva 2006 installation X config

How to fix "X" config on a new Mandriva 2006 installation? 

I just did this new installation and it boots up to the command line
okay, but GUI does not work.  When I tried 'startx' from the command 
line, I got these messages: 

   xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serveauth.4063 
   execv3 failed for /etc/X11/X (errno2) 
   xinit: Server error. 

# uname -a ... gives this result: 
   Linux localhost 2.6.12-12mdk #1 Fri Sep 9 18:15:22 CEST 2005 i686 AMD 
   Athlon(TM) XP 2600+ unknown GNU/Linux 

I ran XFdrake and saw this: 
   Graphic card:  S3 86C375 (ViRGE/DX) 
   Monitor:       Flat panel 1280x1024 
   Resolution:    1152x864 16bpp 
   Test           (ran this test and the display looked fine) 

A search for installed "X" configuration files produced this list:

The exact same installation worked fine on my previous Mandriva 
installation (that apparently has a damaged hard disk).
