no sound

Hey folks,
I've been trying to figure out this sound problem for about 2 weeks
now and no luck.  My brother has a Dell Dimension 3000, and it comes
with integrated audio and he also added Sound Blaster Live 24 bit. 
After trying several things unsuccessfully, we decided to pull out
sound blaster card and re-installed Ubuntu, so now I am only running
on the integrated audio.

Clicking on the volume control on the panel gives me this:
The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to
control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer
plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the
speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the
menu.

"alsa-mixer" gives me:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
