It might also be worth nothing that Fry's Electronics has very cheap systems.  
I haven't looked recently, but two weeks ago, they had a system with an AMD 
Sempron 2200, 40G HD, 128MB RAM, built-in 10/100 (and Linspire) for $150.  A 
co-worker picked up one or two of them.  Apparently they are roughly the 
quality of the old e-machines or new pretty-much-anything-mass-marketed 
systems.
