That's way beyond lame; I've never heard of a drive with any time
limitation.

I've got DEC RZ26 and RZ28 drives at work that've been powered on for 10
years+. I'm phasing them out, but not in any particular hurry (RAID
0+1).  IBM used to make *good* toys.
 
If you're looking for big IDE storage I've been very happy with 100GB
WD1000 drives.
