PVM troubleshooting

Hello,
I don't know what to check next, and was hoping someone had some ideas:
pvm console has PVM_ROOT set as /usr/share/pvm3 on two machines and the bash environment variable is also set likewise.  When I rsh to each machine and echo $PVM_ROOT it is correct.  But when in the pvm console, trying to add the other host, it says the variable is set to empty, "".  If nobody has any ideas, I'll go hunt down the pvm mailing list.
