I think the main issue is being able to track and troubleshoot your own
mail relays issues. This probably doesn't apply to small use for
individuals. But if you need to track down why an email bounced or wasn't
received, it is nice to be able to read the mail logs.

Also, it is great to use exim, for example, to show SMTP debugging.
