well,
I've setup a small linux box with 2 ethernet interfaces:
1. goes to the cablemodem
2. goes to the switch.

you can use either iptables or ipchains to do the nat/firewall/port 
forwarding and simply have it sit there doing its own thing. the other 
machines will not care (as far as they are concerned, they have access to the 
net).

Its the arrangement I use at home with quite a lot of success.
