Launched in 1997, the Cisco Networking Academy Program has evolved from a high school network support curriculum to a worldwide educational program to advance the Internet Economy. The Academies and Ecosystem partners expand the curriculum as well as the technology and techniques to deliver it through continuous improvement.
 
The Academy Connection is the virtual home of the Cisco Networking Academy Program. The program prepares tomorrow's IT workforce, helps bridge the digital divide, and allows one to experience true e-learning technology.

The Academy Connection also provides access for members to the Academy community where they can effectively manage Academies, classes, users, and deliver curriculum and exams.

The Decision Support Systems team has an immediate opening for a Systems Administrator.  This position is the sole Systems Administrator working with a small development team that supports DSS and research activities.  Our team develops online reporting functionality, product enhancements and special projects to support a global online learning community.  Products used include Oracle, Apache, PHP, Linux, Java and MySQL.

Experience/knowledge should include:
- Windows NT/2000
- Solaris
- Linux
- scripting language (Perl preferred)

While a complete list of responsibilities cannot possibly be provided, examples of such would be:
- Server support, administration and maintenance (Windows, Linux and Solaris environments) in a Production environment.
- Identifying hardware and software problems
- Finding and implementing solutions to hardware/software issues that arise
- Support developers and database administrators.
- Documentation required for endusers to access systems.
- Install, support, troubleshoot and maintain software.
- Support all aspects of Java development from the server side, including Tomcat.


Required abilities:
- Must be proactive in system administration and monitoring activities.  If a server is down, you should know before the team does and make appropriate notifications.
- Must be a self-starter.
- Must take initiative to address hardware/software incidents.
- Strong communication skills.
- Must follow through on tasks and continually update manager.
- Have a desire to "jump in" and learn new technologies.
- If faced with an issue with an unknown solution must be enthusiastic and tackle the problem at hand.


Preferred abilities/experience/knowledge:
- Strong background in Solaris or Linux.
- Three - five years experience or a bachelor's degree and one year of experience.
- Experience in performing tuning tasks at the operating system level to support productions systems such as a web environments or Oracle database.

Required Professional Skills:
- Be responsive to users and the development team.
- Appropriate demeanor.  Part of the sales department is located at this location.


Compensation:  This position is as a contract worker through a local employment agency.
- Salary is commensurate with experience.
- Medical insurance.
- Paid Vacation.

This position is located at 24th Street and Camelback in Phoenix.  Persons applying for the job should expect to work onsite at this location.

The schedule for this position is generally 8 am - 5 pm, Monday - Friday.  These hours are generally flexible and alternative schedules can be discussed with the team lead in advance of such schedule changes.  This person is on call 24x7 (although only three off hours calls have been required in the last year).

There is potential within this position to telecommute on a part-time basis.  Those arrangements must be approved in advance by the Team Lead.
