Getting DRI to work

Hello, this is a repost from about 2 weeks ago. I have a problem with DRI 
not being initialized. I built X 4.3 from source and compiled the 
appropriate DRI driver module for my card and moved it to 
~/modules/2.4.19/kernel/drivers/char/drm ( I appoligize if this path is 
incorrect here, the driver is in the correct path on my system).
when I run glx info it reports DRI as being disabled. But a look at the logs 
reveals that the driver is being loaded and installed with no warning or 
errors. The module is radeon.o and the card is the ATI radeon M9. if you 
would like to see the logs and the Xconfig I can post them if it would help
