Backup Cron Job

I have built a similar script but I don't go as far as stopping MySQL. 
I just compress the entire data directory, place it in a .htaccess
protected directory that only will allow a local IP address (LAN file
server) and then in the CRONTAB on the file server, I do a WGET from
that protected directory.  This happens every hour and has saved my but
several times.
