nah, that message just means that X isnt set up correctly.  at the boot 
prompt, type 'linux init 3'.  this will get you to a text-based login.  
login as your regular user, then type 'startx'.  theoretically, X will 
start, then crash.  Then you can look through the /var/log/XFree86.0.log 
(or whatever it is) and find out what the problem is.
