running (vanilla) BASIC applications on Linux

If you are talking new development and you want something good for
'applications' (not device drivers, kernels or low level stuff).  I
would say Python or Ruby is the way to go.

They are the 'next generation' basic.  Meaning they are incredibly easy
to use and be procifient with, but unlike basic are suitably equipped to
bigger and better things.

If you have existing applications or just cant give up the notion of
using basic.  GNOME Basic was rather far along a while back (but dont
know what kind of work has been done lately with all focus going on
mono).  It could actually run Visual Basic applications to a certain
degree including forms.

About a year or so ago, I was asked to compare the two products for
someone and talked to the maintainers of both products and met with one
of them face to face to explore.  At that time GNOME Basic was far more
advanced but had less of the 'pretty flashy' parts. (i.e. its engine was
much stronger but lacked tools to make it easy ot use) and KBasic seemed
the reverse.
