Thanks Hans,
Yeah it was DNS they told me which DNS server to connect to (even gave me an ip address) but this morining when I did ipconfig /all on one of the NT boxes I saw that they didn't have a DNS server (or at least no one here is connected to a DNS server). I have to assume that their proxy server is somehow handling name resolution since I now can get out to the net from my browswer (yes I'm tryping this up from my linux box). And I was able to install xiamian using the proxy settings but Xchat, gnomeICU, evolution, and mozilla mail can not reach outside by domain name (mental note figure out a way for mozilla mail servers to resolve though the proxy just like the broswer). I set wins to be first with my name resolution in my smb.conf file but I *still* can't ping or otherwise reach the boxes on the network. (this isn't that critical anymore because since I can smbclient into the M$ shares nobody need know or care).

On a related note. The problem I was having with the install was either KDE or haredware related. They gave me another box so I could test against and the install went text book perfect. The only thing I could think of that I did differently was I didn't install KDE this time. I don't *really* think it was KDE but it doesn't seem to make since to me that 7.1 would have worked (and it did fine) but 7.2 would not have if it was a hardware issue. btw I'm pretty sure I had KDE installed on the 7.1 install as well. Anyway I don't really use KDE (I just figured I had so much space and it wasn't like it was *my* box......) so I swapped computers and I'm up and running with RH 7.2 they got me Star Office 6.0 (I have to install it from the Mandrake site). And were going to by me the evolution connetor but it only works with a Win2K exchange server and they are still running 5.5 here.

Thanks everyone for all your help. Now I'm going to work on convincing them that Linux is the best platform to develop from.
