If I'm not mistaken*  with Redhat**, the common runlevels are:

1 single-user mode, no network
3 console, multiuser, network
5 GUI
6 reboot

so an 'init 6' would to be analogous to 'shutdown -r now'.

** Others dists probably define it differently
