Learning Linux, beginner needs help...

Any distro will do.  There is a new Mandrake Gaming edition that includes a
copy of the Sims.  And RedHat is also very popular.  As far as games
programming, there are even a couple of books dedicated to games programming
on linux.  (Check amazon).

  You are probably best off using OpenGL and SDL(www.opengl.org ,
www.libsdl.org) as your graphics and sound/input APIs.  For development
tools, gcc is included with every distro - and by all means use it.  You
will also need to pick an editor, like Emacs or vi.  Otherwise, you can buy
CodeWarrior for Linux from Metroworks.  Lastly, if your game is 3d, make
sure you have a decent graphics card - either a GeForce from nvidia or a
Radeon from ATI.  Make sure you also have latest drivers installed.
