You have the right idea Derek - go for it.

Ssh is just like any service - keep up to date on the patches and you're
at a reduced risk.  

I would argue that just because you don't have shell access doesn't make
the server any safer. *cough* wu-ftpd *cough* buffer overflow *cough*
