A book that might fit your qualifications is "Hackers: Heros of the
Computer Revolution" by Steven Levy.

Another book that's worth a look is "Godel, Escher, Bach:  An Eternal
Golden Braid" by Douglas Hofstadter.  (I would call this book computer
related, but not IT related though.)
