machine locking up when setting time

Hello all

I am having a strange problem. I have installed a new motherboard, a 
soyo dragon , and am running suse8.

When I try to use either the netdate or rdate command to set my time the 
machine locks up. All else is working as expected. I am not overclocking 
or doing anything else out of the ordinary. My other machines are able 
to set the time with no issues.
