- From my extensive research (about 3 months worth), I came up with the 
following three conclusions:

1) Dell is a horrible brand for their high rate of failure.

2) IBM and Toshiba make the best laptops, while Toshiba's tend to give more 
"bang for the buck".

3) Apple makes great portable solutions if you can break the Intel dependency 
(which is easy with open source).

Of course, reading through the replies would seem to contradict point 1, but 
the overwhelming opinion (forums, IRC, Usenet, friends) was that Dell laptops 
are not a good investment.
