FTP is sort of like the single file version of NFS.  Although there is a
module out there called ftpfs, it still has to open a connection for
every file, listing, etc whereas NFS is an actual file system meant for
high loads and strain but no security (like ftp) unless you pipe over an
ssh conn (sftp).
