You got it exactly: just providing a mechanism from which the standard
compilation process can work in an automated fashion.

AFAIKT modifications to the source only occur in small patches to
accomodate LHS, fixes for sandbox violations, or other small details.  At
the users discretion, all new packages can be built in a sandbox,
preventing access to the running filesystem by the build process.

x86 for sure.  Recommended 686, but doable on 586 with patience, 486 with
prebuilt packages ;).  Work is currently beginning in earnest on a PPC
version.
