agetty problems...

I keep noticing my server making hard drive noises every few seconds,
when there should not be any activity..
I look at /var/log/messages and I get this


Sep 30 00:37:33 carthage init: Id "c1" respawning too fast: disabled for
5 minutes
Sep 30 00:37:34 carthage init: Id "c2" respawning too fast: disabled for
5 minutes
Sep 30 00:37:34 carthage init: Id "c4" respawning too fast: disabled for
5 minutes
Sep 30 00:37:34 carthage init: Id "c3" respawning too fast: disabled for
5 minutes
Sep 30 00:37:34 carthage init: Id "c5" respawning too fast: disabled for
5 minutes
Sep 30 00:37:35 carthage init: Id "c6" respawning too fast: disabled for
5 minutes


So then I look at /var/log/syslog

Sep 30 00:43:35 carthage /sbin/agetty[21430]: /dev/tty1: cannot open as
standard input: No such device
Sep 30 00:43:35 carthage /sbin/agetty[21431]: /dev/tty3: cannot open as
standard input: No such device
Sep 30 00:43:35 carthage /sbin/agetty[21432]: /dev/tty2: cannot open as
standard input: No such device
Sep 30 00:43:35 carthage /sbin/agetty[21433]: /dev/tty4: cannot open as
standard input: No such device
Sep 30 00:43:35 carthage /sbin/agetty[21434]: /dev/tty5: cannot open as
standard input: No such device
Sep 30 00:43:36 carthage /sbin/agetty[21435]: /dev/tty6: cannot open as
standard input: No such device


I wasn't aware that agetty needed a 'device' for input..?  is it looking
for a mouse or something?
I've never had this problem before. I just rebuilt the kernel, so I'm
assuming it's something in it that I've screwed up, but I can't for the
life of me figure out what it is.  Or what I've done differently from
any other kernel for my other systems..  Except this server has no
keyboard or mouse attached to it.
