I'm actually glad for the way it is done in Suse, Redhat, Mandrake, etc.
I very much prefer the Sys V init scripts to the one massive rc.local
controlling everything.  It's also easier to start and stop individual
services.
I didn't like xinetd when I first saw it because I was used to having
inetd.conf to configure, but once I spent some time with xinetd and the
way things are broken up, it's actually much nicer to me, and also has a
lot of added control that inetd didn't provide.
