getting a special character

In vim while in insert mode try "<ctrl>-k e '". That yeilds "é". Is that the
e you want?

I don't go beyond the germanic characters, but <ctrl>-k opens up the
two-stroke characters.

There's also something for the shell in general, but I haven't gotten that
to work.
