Problem with suse 7.2

Are you running in console mode? If you're running in the GUI and you use a 
console window running as root you might run into that problem. Your SuSE 
menu should have a yast item on it - that's what I tend to use, that way it 
makes its own window. 

You might also want to try mounting your SuSE disks and finding yoru libc 
rpm's and reinstall. This should get rid of your problem as well.
