Refresh SCSI bus devices

I have a Linux system with a SCSI host bus adapter. I add another device to the SCSI bus, say a hard drive. How do I refresh the bus and the device system so that my new /dev/sdb becomes a valid device?

Knowing Linux I probably just have to take some service down and up again but I don't know which one.
