I have only seen linux boxen 'lock up' because of a hardware problem,
a race condition (like a custom compile of X - don't ask), etc. You
might want to write some logging scripts, throw your daemons into
debug mode, etc to catch what's causing your box to lock up.

I've seen other linux admins completely lose their minds when their
boxes lock up because they NEVER lock up.

Most of the NT guys I know flip the reset switch and go back to
reading slashdot without losing a beat. :-) Ok, that was a cheap
shot. I'm a bad BOFH.

Mandrake 8.0 is decent imo. We use it here in the office as a Samba
machine
and it's been almost reliable. So far in 3 weeks it has hard-locked
up
twice, so it's definitely doing better than Windows* could ever hope
to. I
personally dislike it because 1) it's install is very dumbed down and
not
as detailed as I would like, 2) it is not Debian;) , and 3) a basic
default
install of it has locked up 3 times on a machine that otherwise
doesn't
lock up.

By far, I have had the most luck with Debian (just upg'd to 2.2r3,
2.4.5)
in stability, security, and tolerability. In further response to what
you
said about Redhat, buggy Redhat distributions ceased to surprise me
after
5.2 or so.

Cheers,
Garrett

Ok, I just grabbed a copy of Redhat 7.1 from their distribution site,
burned it to CD and installed it on a laptop.

Tell me if I'm crazy, or is it normal for Linux distributions these
days to ship with older KDE (this came with 1.1.2) and old buggy
linux
kernels (2.2.16). linux-2.2.16 seems to have some odd bug with the
3c57x controller. Weird messages appear in syslog such as "eth0:
transmit timed out", and various other Tx/Rx errors. It surprises
me that Redhat ships with this kernel.

I'm new to the list so I was wondering what the general concensus
is with Mandrake 8.0.

My morning rant :)
