no access to floppy or zip

[mazdaracer]

[root@rotor pete]# mount /mnt/floppy
[root@rotor pete]# ls /mnt/floppy
ls: /mnt/floppy: Input/output error
[root@rotor pete]# mount /mnt/zip
[root@rotor pete]# ls /mnt/zip
ls: /mnt/zip: Input/output error

The zip is a parallel port that has the printer attached.  When I did the ls 
on the floppy I heard the zip activate.
